Public Health Foundation of India
The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) joined Equitap in 2008. PHFI is a response to redress the limited institutional capacity in India for strengthening training, research and policy development in the area of Public Health. PHFI is a public-private partnership and the major partners who contributed to its formation include the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) Government of India, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and several philanthropic Indian contributors (individual and corporate). PHFI is working towards building public health capacity in India by establishing 5-7 new institutes of public health over the next 6 years. assisting the growth of existing public health training institutions/departments, establishing a strong national research network of public health and allied institutions. The new institutes would undertake policy and programme relevant research that will advance public health goals in prioritized areas, undertake analytic work for generating policy recommendations related to public health action and develop a vigorous advocacy platform to effectively communicate these recommendations, and to facilitate the establishment of an independent accreditation body for degrees in public health which are awarded by training institutions across India. PHFI has a growing research group with expertise in health economics, demography, epidemiology, biostatistics, sociology and general public health.
