The Faculty of Economics has been consistently developing expertise in Health Economics since 1979 through research, staff development and teaching. The Faculty has provided an undergraduate course in Health Economics to its own students, some short courses for other institutions and for the Ministry of Public Health. Several international workshops are provided in cooperation with the UNDP, World Bank and World Health Organisation. Research activities intially focused on economic aspects of malaria control, health care financing and disease patterns in Thailand.
The objectives and functions of the centre are as follows, 1. to develop expertise in the application of health economics in the formulation of health care policies, in planning and resource allocation, and in the health care delivery process in Thailand 2.To strengthen health economics research capability both in Thailand and in South-East Asia, with respect to health policy, health care reform and related issues to improve effectiveness, efficiency, and equity 3. To encourage research in economic analysis and evaluation of disease control, with special attention to tropical diseases 3. To provide advisory and information services in South-East Asia on health economics research.
